    Covering of ordinals

    The paper focuses on the structure of fundamental sequences of ordinals smaller than ϔ0\epsilon_0. A first result is the construction of a monadic second-order formula identifying a given structure, whereas such a formula cannot exist for ordinals themselves. The structures are precisely classified in the pushdown hierarchy. Ordinals are also located in the hierarchy, and a direct presentation is given.Comment: Accepted at FSTTCS'0

La dĂ©marche proposĂ©e par le GUM normalise la façon de propager les incertitudes lorsque l’on dispose d’un modĂšle mathĂ©matique reliant la grandeur mesurĂ©e aux variables permettant sa dĂ©termination et qui reprĂ©sentent les sources d’incertitudes. Pour la dĂ©termination des incertitudes, relativement peu d’articles traitent du processus de mesure et suivent une procĂ©dure Ă©tablie. La source d’erreur la plus Ă©tudiĂ©e, est celle provenant des algorithmes. Dans cette Ă©tude, une procĂ©dure dĂ©taillĂ©e d’estimation des incertitudes est prĂ©sentĂ©e.     Vatalanib for metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) resistant to imatinib: final results of a phase II study

    BACKGROUND: Vatalanib (PTK787/ZK 222584) inhibits a few tyrosine kinases including KIT, platelet-derived growth factor receptors (PDGFRs) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs). We report efficacy and safety results of vatalanib in advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) resistant to imatinib or both imatinib and sunitinib. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients whose metastatic GIST had progressed on imatinib were enrolled. Nineteen (42.2%) patients had received also prior sunitinib. Vatalanib 1250 mg was administered orally daily. RESULTS: Eighteen patients (40.0%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 25.7-54.3%) had clinical benefit including 2 (4.4%) confirmed partial remissions (PR; duration, 9.6 and 39.4 months) and 16 (35.6%) stabilised diseases (SDs; median duration, 12.5 months; range, 6.0-35.6+ months). Twelve (46.2%) out of the 26 patients who had received prior imatinib only achieved either PR or SD compared with 6 (31.6%, all SDs) out of the 19 patients who had received prior imatinib and sunitinib (P = 0.324). The median time to progression was 5.8 months (95% CI, 2.9-9.5 months) in the subset without prior sunitinib and 3.2 (95% CI, 2.1-6.0) months among those with prior imatinib and sunitinib (P = 0.992). Vatalanib was generally well tolerated. CONCLUSION: Vatalanib is active despite its narrow kinome interaction spectrum in patients diagnosed with imatinib-resistant GIST or with imatinib and sunitinib-resistant GIST

    A Novel System of Polymorphic and Diverse NK Cell Receptors in Primates

    There are two main classes of natural killer (NK) cell receptors in mammals, the killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) and the structurally unrelated killer cell lectin-like receptors (KLR). While KIR represent the most diverse group of NK receptors in all primates studied to date, including humans, apes, and Old and New World monkeys, KLR represent the functional equivalent in rodents. Here, we report a first digression from this rule in lemurs, where the KLR (CD94/NKG2) rather than KIR constitute the most diverse group of NK cell receptors. We demonstrate that natural selection contributed to such diversification in lemurs and particularly targeted KLR residues interacting with the peptide presented by MHC class I ligands. We further show that lemurs lack a strict ortholog or functional equivalent of MHC-E, the ligands of non-polymorphic KLR in “higher” primates. Our data support the existence of a hitherto unknown system of polymorphic and diverse NK cell receptors in primates and of combinatorial diversity as a novel mechanism to increase NK cell receptor repertoire

    Development and analysis of the Soil Water Infiltration Global database

    In this paper, we present and analyze a novel global database of soil infiltration measurements, the Soil Water Infiltration Global (SWIG) database. In total, 5023 infiltration curves were collected across all continents in the SWIG database. These data were either provided and quality checked by the scientists who performed the experiments or they were digitized from published articles. Data from 54 different countries were included in the database with major contributions from Iran, China, and the USA. In addition to its extensive geographical coverage, the collected infiltration curves cover research from 1976 to late 2017. Basic information on measurement location and method, soil properties, and land use was gathered along with the infiltration data, making the database valuable for the development of pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for estimating soil hydraulic properties, for the evaluation of infiltration measurement methods, and for developing and validating infiltration models. Soil textural information (clay, silt, and sand content) is available for 3842 out of 5023 infiltration measurements ( ∌ 76%) covering nearly all soil USDA textural classes except for the sandy clay and silt classes. Information on land use is available for 76% of the experimental sites with agricultural land use as the dominant type ( ∌ 40%). We are convinced that the SWIG database will allow for a better parameterization of the infiltration process in land surface models and for testing infiltration models. All collected data and related soil characteristics are provided online in *.xlsx and *.csv formats for reference, and we add a disclaimer that the database is for public domain use only and can be copied freely by referencing it.
